Ever wondered why the cursor key layout on your keyboard is the way it is now?
Neither did I. But I should have. Here’s a brief yet fascinating account of the decision. It’s refreshing and indeed eye-opening to realise that some of the seemingly intuitive things in life were thought through and analysed so effectively.
The layout is utter crap for playing Quake though.

Jesus is more real than Santa →
Catholic Priests endearing themselves to young kids again… When will they learn that little people just aren’t interested in their ramblings? Save it for later when guilt and fear have more bearing.
I’ve seen Santa. I ain’t never seen Jesus. Baby Jesus, yes, but not the good Jesus who restores sight and feeds the homeless.
These kind of things always remind me of a very...
Those pesky Shutterfly cards...
More and more Christmas cards turn up each year which are Shutterfly things of growing families, and lovely they are too, but there’s one major drawback: They don’t stand up very nicely on your mantlepiece.
Fed up with floppings and fallings, I decided I had enough time on my hands to come up with a solution. And that solution is: Post-it notes.
Step 1: Start with your shutterfly...
Heavy Metal does dull your brain
I’ve got two good friends who are suffering from heavy metal toxicity issues. Judging by the symptoms, I may have many more, including my very best friend in the world: me. But I am also a certified hypochondriac (it’s the only medical certificate I have), known by my very best aquaintance to have suffered from ADD, Slightly-Manic Depression (also known as Piqued Depression), phantom...
Dog privacy
DMC was out and about today and happened to meet a dog owning neighbour who lives here in Stuyvesant Town, the 11,000 apartment large complex by the East Village built for returning WWII veterans.
They got talking and it turns out that the complex’s new owners are royal pains in the arse about dogs (incidentally, pets have only recently been legally allowed in the complex, and there’s...
Cut cable cripples crappy internets →
This no doubt explains why I couldn’t get to the Kuwait Investment Authority’s website earlier today.
No really. I tried to. And it didn’t work. And all way before I read this. Really! At approximately 9:47 and 30 seconds EST today. Nor could my brother, from Slovenia.
But didn’t this happen a few times earlier this year? How hard can it be to not cut submarine cables...
Google iPhone voice recognition
Google’s iPhone App does voice recognition now using unpublished APIs and proving the point that if you’re big enough you can squeeze anything (in this case a direct contravention of the terms and conditions of iPhone development) through any system (in this case a totally random approval process).
Until my last attempt it’s worked rather well. But here, in a frustrating...
Pron in Pubilc
A week ago today I travelled to the upper west side to visit the doctor. I used the B train which I haven’t done for a long time.
The train I ended up having to get wasn’t too full. There were more seats than old ladies, so I sat down. I found a seat next to a well-dressed white haired old man in pinstripe trousers and a beige trench coat. A fine and well groomed moustache matched his...
It's been a while, and it still makes no sense
The below letter was sent to us from a vague acquaintance down south. I’m still flabbergasted.
Cuckoooooooooooooooooooooooo!
We got it the day after the election. Enjoy, if that’s the right word…
This is an e-mail to inform those that I have daily contact with, or who I have in the past called friend or acquaintance, that I no longer want to be addressed as an American…I...
Wow. For even better results, be sure to use the HD button (hover over the video once it starts, or just click here).

“hitlernoobs” and World War II →
Yeah, I’m sure it’s all over the place already and it might even be old. I can’t be harsed with digging up the backstory as someone else is bound to do/have done it.
It’s no World At War. It’s no Laurence Olivier. But it tells a story and connects to its audience in ways that are powerfully parallel.
Yes, I just compared World At War with an animated GIF. Live...

Google Calendar has a better UI than iCal.
Viewing a PDF attached to GMail is easier on iPhone than Mac OS X (which downloads it and then opens a viewer).
Hard Drive Formatting: [NERD ALERT!] A portable USB drive formatted with NTFS is quicker to use from a Mac if you plug it into a Windows PC on the same network as the Mac than directly into the Mac. Portable?! In order to pre-armistice a...
If you were to break Chuck Norris open you would find another Chuck Norris...
– I know Chuck Norris jokes are old, but this is the first time I’ve received a Pee Dee Eff that looks like a fax via e-mail (PDF Link). This may be the Chuck Norris of all Chuck Norris joke compendiums. I really really hope it is.
Thanks be to Mo.
A virus on my Mac, part 3 →
I got pwned last week (my security expert, DC, had this to say when I explained: “U r pwned. Unplug. Drink”). I got called out on not following up on the pwnage. And now we have a November 21st support post old page updated with new version numbers (corrections by TUAW) from Apple which even made the BBC News, recommending that users install one of three commercial anti-virus software...
