Speaking of the isolation and loneliness of spacemen, I once had the pleasure to meet the genuinely inimitable Andrew Logan at a birthday party.

He was kind enough to speak with me for the 90 seconds it took to persuade him that I was an unimaginably unimaginative oik. I reacted to his proposal that in the future everyone should live alone in their own space suit with their own oxygen supply by protesting the logistical issues such a future presented. I was about to get onto the sociological ramifications when he decided he would miss his train if he stayed any longer. But he left with a polite good-bye and a smile and a handshake, bless his incredible glass sculptures and jewellery.
