With the economy so bad, and so many financial services and web developers out of work these days here in New York, recruiters are finding that they can get away with less and less information all the time, but this rules.

Among the various inconsiderations rammed down the potential employee’s throat by this briefest of e-mails (in response to which, incidentally, I have submitted my resumé, twice) are:

• No care has been put into describing the job.
• More care has been put into colouring the e-mail than describing the job (New Jersey is in a subtly different colour than the rest of the first paragraph - cut & paste!).
• Almost no effort (including colouring) has been put into the e-mail.
• New Jersey isn’t huge, but it’s more than just Hoboken and Newark Airport. Perhaps recruiters really can count on desperate commutes.
• If you are a C# developer, you are a .Net developer. It’s a realllly broad brush to paint with. It’s like requiring that your holiday destination have atmosphere.

The recruiter’s just called me, and apparently it’s for Verizon and that’s the only information Verizon have given them. I’ve been asked if I would relocate to New Jersey (although they still don’t know where). I have suggested that I am strongly disinclined to do so.

Update: It’s in Edison, NJ. When asked whether I would relocate, I repeated my suggestion in stronger terms, though polite. The very kindly and polite Debra laughed with great understanding when I pointed out that I wasn’t going to spend 4 hours a day on a train… Maybe after Obama’s had a year of giving taxpayer money to the banks will I give that a go. Just for a laugh…
