There is a gentle simmering sport named Cricket played by a large number of nations around the world (typically nations linked in their pasts through occupation by empire-building England). The Australians have perfected an in-game pastime known as “sledging”, whereby they attempt to distract the opposition by pissing them off verbally between plays. They’re crude, ugly and cutting with it, often hilarious but in general not for the dinner table.
To summarise the last 3 weeks of world cricket: Australia and India have been playing a series. The Australians complained that an Indian called their one black player a monkey. One Indian player was banned, the Indian team threatened to quit the series and boycott international cricket, and the Australians played pissy brats. Then they unbanned the player, India played on, and Australian played down their complaint.
It has now been decided that the use of the word Monkey was offensive but not racist. W. T. F?
