I noticed this the other day - it seemed riciulous. I don’t know what the figure is over here in the UK, but the prisons here are in plenty of overcrowding trouble too.

If you build it (a police state) they will come ([insert Huxleyesque consequences here])…

Vaguely related, and well worth a read to open your eyes to the revolting treatment of “illegal” immigrants in the US and the way the prison system is privately run (i.e. not for the benefit of society, but for the benefit of shareholders), this New Yorker article from the other day on immigration prisons for families.
