New York is actually pretty bike-friendly. It’s the cyclists that are usually cock-knockers - you know, the ones that seem to think that one-way signs don’t apply to them, that traffic lights are optional, that pedestrians are just a sidewalk nuisance. You know, the ones that somehow find themselves underneath a large truck all too infrequently.
I’m not one of those. Perhaps it was growing up in Cambridge where bikes were not optional, but I take my time and potter around. I should really have a pipe and a cloth cap. I sit bolt upright and revel in the fact that I’m traveling at precisely twice walking speed. If someone did open a door in front of me the worst that might happen is that I might not have enough time to chastise them before I gently bump into their cup-holder.
But even so, a street with a bike lane is preferable to one without (see Aaron’s post below).
Here’s a map of bike lanes in New York. I think they’ve just added new ones which means that DMC and I can at last reach Central Park by bike lane. Roll on warmer weather!
